How to Get Your Driver's License Back After a New Hampshire DUI Conviction

If you have been convicted of a DUI in the state of New Hampshire, the penalties are severe, and one of the most dreaded punishments is the driver’s license suspension. Living without driving privileges can be stressful, so you may be eager to learn about the process of reinstatement. You need to follow certain steps to get your right to drive back.

The Procedure for Driver’s License Reinstatement in New Hampshire

Depending on your situation, you may need to pay fines, complete Driver Improvement Training, and complete Drug or Alcohol Rehabilitation before you are eligible for reinstatement. You can learn more about the alcohol intervention/education program on the Division of Motor Vehicles website. You will also likely need to provide proof of insurance with a SR-22 form. In some cases, you will also be required to have an ignition interlock device installed on your car.

If you are classified as a habitual offender, you need to be de-certified before your license is restored. You will need to request a hearing in order to make this happen. You can contact the Bureau of Hearings at (603) 271-2486 or (603) 271-3486. You can contact an experienced New Hampshire DUI lawyer to find out more about the process.

Reinstatements are handled by the Bureau of Financial Responsibility.

SR-22 Insurance Requirements

In order to ensure that you have met the minimum car insurance liability requirements defined by the state, you will need to ask your car insurance company to file an SR-22 form with Nevada. Be aware that your car insurance rates will go up, possibly double or triple, as a result of your DUI conviction. However, you need to keep this car insurance for the required amount of time – 3 years – or the insurance company will inform Nevada and your driver’s license will be suspended or revoked again. If you would like to be relieved of your SR-22 insurance certificate requirement once the time has passed or for other reasons, you can contact the following:

NH DOS DMV
FR - SR22 Processing Section

Hardship Driving License

In some states, you have the opportunity to file for special hardship driver’s licenses that allow you to drive under certain circumstances such as to and from work or school. Unfortunately, this is not an option in the state of New Hampshire. That means it is even more important that you follow the reinstatement procedures correctly in order to ensure that you get your driving privileges back as soon as possible.

Ignition Interlock Devices

If you are required to have an ignition interlock device installed on your car, you will need to pay for the installation as well as the maintenance. The device works by asking that you pass a breathalyzer test before the car will start, and it also asks you to pass tests as you drive or an alarm will sound until you pull over and turn off the engine.
