How to Get Your Driver's License Back After a Missouri DWI Conviction
After a Missouri DUI conviction, you may be wondering how you will deal with your driver’s license suspension. What do you do when the time is up? You will have to take steps to get it reinstated so that you can legally get back on the road. Every case is a little different, so if you have questions about the process, you can contact an experienced Missouri DUI attorney to get advice for your specific situation.
Steps for Getting Back on the Road Again
After your suspension period is up, you may be eligible for driver’s license reinstatement. You want to ensure that you have completed all penalties ordered by the court, including jail time, fines, community service, and counseling. Every case is different, so if you’re unsure, you can contact the court that processed your case or a qualified Missouri DUI lawyer.
You must complete the required forms and submit payment for all applicable fees and bring it to the following address:
Driver License Bureau
Truman State Office Building
301 West High St., Room 470
Jefferson City, MO 65105
Currently, the hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, but you can call (573) 526-2407 to confirm that it will be open.
Or you can mail the money and forms to:
Driver License Bureau
P.O. Box 200
Jefferson City, Missouri 65105-0200
Or pay on the phone using Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express: (573) 526-2401
For most cases, you will need to pay $45, file and maintain proof of liability insurance (SR-22) for two years, and file proof of completion of the Substance Abuse Traffic Offenders Program (SATOP). If you have more than one alcohol offense, you will also need to file proof of installation of an ignition interlock device. This chart from the Missouri Department of Revenue explains what forms need to be submitted for what type of case.
You must complete a vision screening and road sign recognition tests. If your license has been revoked, you must also complete the written exam and driving skills test.
SR-22 Insurance Form Requirement
If you are required to show proof of liability insurance, this is done by your insurance provider. You can contact them to adjust your policy accordingly, and they will file the SR-22 form electronically with the state. You need to keep this insurance for two years, otherwise the insurance company will inform the state and you will lose your driving privileges again.
Substance Abuse Traffic Offenders Program
The SATOP agency will file proof with the Drivers License Bureau if you have completed the program. If you have questions or concerns, you can visit their website or call the Department of Mental Health, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, at (572) 522-4020.
Ignition Interlock Device
This is required if you have more than one alcohol offense on your driving record. You must use an approved ignition interlock device installer. They will notify the Department of Revenue when it is completed. You are responsible for all costs involved with installation and maintenance of the device. If you tamper with or attempt to remove it, you will have your driving privileges suspended again, and may face other penalties. The device works by asking you to pass a breathalyzer test before allowing you to start your car. It will also ask for you to pass tests as you drive. If you fail one of these “rolling” tests, your car will sound an alarm. Then you must pull over and stop the car.
