How to Get Your Driver's License Back After an Idaho DUI Conviction

Have you had your driver license revoked or suspended after an Idaho DUI conviction? When your suspension or revocation period is over, you must take steps to reinstate it in order to drive legally again. Some choose to have an Idaho DUI lawyer help them through the process.

The Application Procedure

After the period of time for your suspension or revocation has passed, you must reapply for a license with the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) in Boise and pay a $285 reinstatement fee. You can find the form on the ITD website here. You will need to provide your full name address, driver’s license number, date of birth, and case/file number.

If you choose to pay by check or money order, they should be made payable to the Idaho Transportation Department. There is a $20 service charge if the check is returned for insufficient funds. Or you can pay via Visa or MasterCard by providing the credit card number and expiration date on the form.

Mail your completed form and payment to:

If you want to check your current status or would prefer to pay online, you can also visit the website to do that.

Restricted Driving Permit

You may also apply for a restricted permit before your suspension or revocation period passes. There is an additional $35 fee, and you must apply for a special permit from the court that convicted you. These are given at the court’s discretion, so in order to present the best possible case, you may want to hire an Idaho DUI lawyer to help you. He or she will explain why your job, children, or schooling would be hurt without your ability to drive. When you get the license, you will only be able to use it for the purposes as set out by the state, usually to and from work, school, medical treatments, or drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.

SR 22 Insurance Filings

As a DUI offender, you must also be required to provide proof that you can cover financial obligations you incur if an accident occurs. This means getting insurance coverage that meets the specific requirements set out by the state for those convicted of a DUI. The best way to find out if your insurance meets the requirements is to contact your insurance carrier. They can adjust your policy if needed, and they will need to file an SR22 form with the state. Usually you must keep this insurance police for at least 3 years, or your license will be suspended or revoked again.

Ignition Interlock Device

In some cases, you will be required to get an ignition interlock device installed on your car for a specified period of time in order to get your license reinstated. You will be responsible for the cost of installation as well as the cost of maintaining the equipment. This machine works by requesting a breathalyzer test from you each time you start the car. If you do not provide a clean breath sample , the car will not start, and it will be recorded in the device. Additionally, as you drive, it will ask for more breath samples, in order to ensure that you did not have a friend or family member provide the initial clean sample. But don’t worry, your car won’t just stop if there is a problem. Instead an alarm will sound until you pull over and stop the car.

How an Idaho DUI Attorney Can Help

In some cases, license reinstatement is not automatic. If you have multiple convictions, you may want to seek professional help in order to ensure you can drive legally again.
