How to Get Your Driver's License Back After an Alaska DUI Conviction

If you want to get your driver’s license reinstated after your suspension or revocation period ends, first you need to complete all the requirements ordered by the court, such as fines, court fees, jail time, counseling, and community service. Otherwise, you are not eligible for reinstatement.

The fees for reinstatement of a suspended or revoked driver’s license depend on the number of past DUI convictions and whether another violation, such as speeding, was involved.

Fees for Driver’s License Reinstatement after an Alaska DUI Conviction

For One DUI: $200
For One DUI plus One Other Action: $250
Two DUIs: $500

Additionally, you must pass a knowledge test and a vision test. You will have your photo taken, and you will also have to pay the driver’s license fees. It is usually $20.00, but an alcohol restricted license is $50.00. A commercial license costs $100.

If you are uncertain what fee you must pay, visit the Alaska DMV website. When you pay with a check, your name and address must be pre-printed on it.

SR-22 Form for Alaska DUI Conviction

Alaska also requires that you have an SR-22 from your insurance provider. This is not a special insurance, rather it is a form that verifies that you have meet the specific insurance requirements that Alaska mandates for those who are convicted of a DUI. You can call your insurance carrier to find out exactly that that is for your case and to adjust your coverage appropriately. Then they can file the SR-22 form with the state of Alaska.

Be aware that because of your DUI, you have accumulated points on your driving record, so your insurance rates will go up.

Special Circumstances

If your license has been revoked, reinstatement is not necessarily automatic. It can be a more difficult process if you’ve been convicted of more than one DUI in Alaska or have an aggravated DUI charge. If this is the case for you, you’ll want to hire an experienced Alaska DUI attorney who can help you through the process.

Restricted or Hardship Driver’s Licenses in Alaska

If you have been convicted of an Alaska DUI, you may still be eligible to drive under a hardship limited driver’s license. You must complete a form requesting the limited license, and you will likely have to have an ignition interlock device installed on your car. This device will require you to blow a clean breath sample before allowing the car to start.

For more information, contact the Anchorage Driver Licensing office at 269-3770 or DOA.DMV.ADL@Alaska.gov. It will cost you non-refundable $100 fee for processing to file the form.
